  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from G. Bestick -- Grasping At Slippery Truths : There’s a lot going on in this novel. On the surface it’s the story of Charlie Barnes, a boomer with big ambitions who lacks the discipline and smarts to realize them. Ferris’ narrator is Charlie’s son Jake, who truly loves his dad while being clear-eyed about his faults. Charlie aspires to generosity and a spirit of inclusion, which he undercuts through his hedonism and self-absorption. Although Charlie’s story is firmly anchored in the specifics of his Midwestern life, Ferris in his subtle but loving way is indicting Charlie’s entire generation for the mess their children have inherited. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from g3 from the UP -- Fascinating Tale Told by a Variety of Narrators : Rarely do I want to re-read a novel once I’ve finished, but this one is a web of conflicting memories by a family full of unreliable narrators, and I just had to start reading from the beginning again after the last page. If this makes it sound like the book is a difficult read, be assured that it isn’t. It just deftly tells the tale of Charlie Barnes, who he was and aspired to be, through his eyes and those of his wives and kids, each of whom see, remember, and interpret things differently. I have since read reviews and listened to an author presentation where the reviewers and interviewers gave too much away, so I recommend avoiding the same until you read the book. The construction of the narrative is brilliant and the family relatable in many ways. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 12, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Susan Bass -- Brilliant : Kurt Vonnegut said “We are who we pretend to be, so we must be careful about who we pretend to be.” In this masterpiece by Joshua Ferris Charley Barnes careens through his colorful life to death through the lens of son Jake’s recollections. Yes, the son is named Jake Barnes, famous Hemingway protagonist. This was an immensely satisfying read because it reinforced the power of narrative to ennoble us all. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Sean Doyle -- Another excellent book : by Mr. Ferris. I truly enjoyed the little devices and twists he used to take us along the journey. I like the unconventional nature and style of his writing. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2021 )
  • from Freds Mom -- VINE VOICE : The best book I've read in a long, long time. Joshua Ferris had me on page one. ( 5.0 out of 5 stars )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Brent & Marie -- Great book! : Where do I begin. The story of a father told by a son that deeply loves him. A true to life family of sorts dynamic between people you will recognize at least in essence. The vivid imagery is brought to life in a manner that causes you to question all your senses. I found myself smelling the distinguishing scents, and odors, feeling the disbelief, shock, awe and revelations of understanding. I got to know these characters in a way that brought sadness when we parted. Charlie Barnes, a man that exaggerates, greatly... or does he, well. He's an amazing father, and keeping his word at all cost. The journeys of He and his 3 children, I mean 4... sorry, have distinguishing relationships that bring to light the many failures and triumphs of Charlie Barnes. The unique manner in which I saw my own father in some, "thats a dad thing" way made smile, but made me sad at the same time.. so many three dimensionsal characters that even though you know the narrator's opinion of them, you feel justified having your own, even if different. I not only read the book. I also listened to the Audiobook, narrated by Nick Offerman. Combining the brilliance of the story itself with the unmatched talent of Offerman, I will definitely read/listen to this book again. It is too good not to. I want to find the nuggets of the story I missed along the way. ( Reviewed in the United States on December 15, 2021 )
  • 2.0 out of 5 stars from Donny Rock -- What a mixed-up life. : The story of a man beset by life, his lies, dreams and cons. I found this an unrewarding read, all the time unsure of whom was the narrator at any one time. The sudden jumps from past to present and back again just left me confused. I couldn't recommend this to anyone. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 10, 2021 )
